Careers in String Teaching

ImageCareers in String Teaching, an ASTA project supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, is designed to encourage string students to pursue a career in string teaching. ASTA has created and published several media pieces to help string educators encourage their students, engage students in string teaching, and provide a forum for future string teachers.

ImageASTA has created an online forum for students to research a future career in string teaching. www.careersinstringteaching.com provides access to scholarship information, experienced string teachers for advice and guidance, summer camps, sample lesson plans, and job opportunities. Visitors to the website can participate in live chat room discussions and post questions on message boards. The website also provides information for advisors and parents.

Imagine a Career with Strings Attached! is a collection of teaching strategies designed to generate interest among students in pursuing a career in string teaching. The booklet includes thirteen strategies that can be incorporated into a traditional string curriculum. The strategies are broken down into four parts:

The first ten strategies are designed for the teacher to use in the classroom; they include a variety of lessons, covering conducting, composing, listening, evaluating, improvising, and technology. The National Standards are incorporated into the objectives of each strategy.

The second part provides guidelines for students to participate in performance activities outside of the school setting. These activities may include participation in youth or community orchestras or regional and state competitions.

The third section provides information for a Career Day. These strategies can be incorporated into a school function or an event set up for just the orchestra.

The final strategy is a teacher’s guide to assisting students in developing their peer teaching skills. These strategies are applicable for the entire orchestra or class, or for just a few select students.

The booklets are available to string teachers at no cost except shipping and handling. Please specify quantity when ordering. Order your booklets now!
