Conductor, University Symphony Orchestra

POSITION: Conductor, University Symphony Orchestra

RESPONSIBILITIES: Recruit, build and conduct the UNH Symphony. Conduct rehearsals throughout the two, fourteen-week semesters of the academic year leading to four concert appearances, two each semester. Repeat performances off campus possible. Include the winner(s) of a concerto competition on one program every other year. Allow for, and assist with, preparation of the orchestra for one extra service each semester in support of either the UNH Opera Workshop or the Concert Choir. Participation, for additional pay, with the Summer Youth Music School is highly desired.

DATE OF APPOINTMENT: August 28, 2010 (SYMS is July 19-July 31.)This is a one-year appointment, renewable indefinitely subject to annual review by the department chair as advised by the faculty.

QUALIFICATIONS: Expertise and professional or academic experience as an orchestra conductor. Familiarity with standard repertoire. Ability to rehearse efficiently and to establish a model for future school and professional conductors. Communicate well with UNH orchestra members.

RANK AND SALARY: $10,000 ($5,000 per semester). Additional pay for work at the Summer Youth Music School (SYMS) to be calculated separately.

THE UNIVERSITY: The University of New Hampshire at Durham has a student body of over 13,000 in seven undergraduate schools and colleges and the Graduate School. All levels of study are offered, from undergraduate to doctoral programs.

THE DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC: Music is one of the most active departments on campus with approximately 200 undergraduate majors and 10 graduate students, 20 full-time faculty, 15 part-time faculty, and 5graduate assistants. Degrees offered are the BA, BM, and MA; areas of concentration are music education, performance, theory and composition, and history.
