Youth String Orchestra Director

Job Listing: Director of Kettle Moraine Youth String Orchestra Schauer Arts & Activities Center Hartford, WI The Kettle Moraine Youth String Orchestra is dedicated to providing youth with an outlet to learn and perform as a string orchestra. Students are pushed to their ultimate potential that results in musical excellence. The curriculum includes learning the skills of rehearsal etiquette, following the conductor, synchronized bowing, articulation, intonation, and practice techniques. Our core values instill respect of self and others and the proper role of sharing musical talents in a cooperative setting. KMYSO is generally open to elementary, middle and high school students who play cello, string bass, viola, and violin. Students are divided into two levels, Presto Strings & Bravura Strings, depending on playing ability. Presto Strings is open to students at the end of Suzuki Book 2 or above- no audition necessary. Bravura Strings students begin at the end of Suzuki Book 5 level of playing up through professional-level music and placement in Bravura is determined by audition (Suzuki Books are used only for playing level guidelines and are NOT a requirement for participation).

Expectations: This is a part-time, salaried position with primary work responsibilities from September to early May with preparation work often done during summer months. Summer string camp directing opportunity may be available. Rehearsals will be Wednesdays September - May from 5:30-6:30 and 6:45-8:15pm. Rehearsals are held at The Schauer Center in our rehearsal hall. Concerts are held in conjunction with our Youth Choir in December and May

Duties & Responsibilities: The Director of the Kettle Moraine Youth String Orchestra is responsible for the following: •Conduct all weekly rehearsals and performance opportunities, including two annual concerts •Audition prospective students •Select suitable repertoire for each ensemble & making needed copies/music prep •Develop a strong working relationship with area music educators (school & private teachers) •Communicate with Education Coordinator on a regular basis •Additional tasks as deemed appropriate for this position Director will work closely with the Schauer Center in the following responsibilities: •Abide by and enforce the rules/procedures and expectations of KMYSO •Member recruitment •Determine Rehearsal and Concert schedule •Communication to parents •Developing opportunities for ensembles to perform •Oversee concert logistics including venue setup •Supervise student assistants (if applicable) •Work closely with the Education Coordinator to ensure quality programming is offered. Required Qualifications: •A Bachelors degree in music or music education, string emphasis/expertise preferred •Proven musicianship and pedagogical skills as a performer, conductor, and teacher with an extensive knowledge of all orchestral string instruments. •Proven experience working with student musicians of varying ages and experience •Possess strong communication skills to interact appropriately with Schauer Center staff, students, parents, private teachers, and school music teachers. •Have an energetic personality and ability to inspire and motivate students to achieve their best. •Successful completion of background check for selected candidate

The Kettle Moraine Youth String Orchestra is part of the Schauer Arts & Activities Center’s Community School of the Arts. The School of the Arts offers classes for all ages in dance, music, theater, and visual arts. With the Ruth A. Knoll Theater and Suckow Family Art Gallery, the Schauer Center is the Kettle Moraine’s regional center for the arts, staging professional touring performances, being home to community arts groups, as well as hosting social and business functions.
