The American String Teacher journal, or AST, is an award-winning
quarterly journal published by the American String Teachers Association
(ASTA) and featuring member-contributed content. All feature and forum
articles are subject to a blind peer-review process to ensure that
published content is appropriate for our readers and is of the highest
quality.
Sections of the journal contributed by ASTA members include:
Association News
State and student chapter news items submitted to the AST editor or
taken from state chapter newsletters.
Deadlines:
February issue = Nov. 1
May issue = Feb. 1
August issue = May 1
November issue = Aug. 1
Columns
Columns are not subject to Editorial Committee review.
Deadlines: columns are accepted
and published primarily in the order they are received. Because these
items are not subject to Editorial Committee review, AST receives quite
a number of submissions. Normal time between submission and publication
is often up to one year.
Teaching Tips: ideas for teaching; can be based on one
person’s personal experience; 750 to1,500 words.
Member2Member: expansion of teaching tips; shorter tidbits
submitted by members; each contribution must be fewer than 500
words.
Master Class: usually written by a national ASTA award
winner or other prominent, highly respected person; 1,500 to 2,500
words. My Turn: an editorial opinion piece; limit to exactly one page
in length (no more than 850 words)
Articles
Feature and forum articles are subject to Editorial Committee Review
(and should count toward tenure credit). See “Feature
Article Submission Guidelines,” below, for a complete
description of desired contents and submission requirements.
Deadlines: because of the
Editorial Committee Review process, there is no deadline for article
submissions. The Editorial Committee Review process may take from two to
five months. After review, many authors are asked to revise their
articles in some way, which adds to the production time. Criteria other
than when the article was submitted are often used to determine which
article is published in which issue. It is impossible, therefore, to
provide an estimated time between submission and publication.
Departments
Notes: compiled from news releases
submitted to the National Office; contains such announcements as
appointments, upcoming events for string teachers/players, competitions
deadlines, awards, other news items.
Showcase: compiled from news releases
submitted to the National Office; news of String Industry Council
members.

music, videotapes, and software. To become a reviewer, contact: Marg
